Our staff will always help to dress you in the gowns, and may need to take your measurements. If you’re nervous about being half naked in front of another person, take a deep breath and relax. We’re discreet and respectful - to be honest, it’s so completely normal, we don’t even notice any more! However if you do feel really uncomfortable, talk to us - you can always have a friend or family member help you.
Dress the part - definitely do wear your best fitting bra – even if it’s black! While it’s probably not the lingerie you’ll actually be wearing under your gown, good support is an important part of getting a good fit. If you have a strapless bra or bandeaux, that can help you visualise the different necklines without being distracted by bra straps, but don’t go buying new underwear just for your fitting - As a general rule, you shouldn’t buy your wedding lingerie or jewelry until you’ve chosen your dress, so that you can allow for different necklines, etc.
Trying on the Gowns:
We have sample gowns from a variety of designers, making it easy for you to try on many different styles of gowns, to find the style which best suits your shape. You'll also be able to try on veils, jewellery and other accessories, all with the help of a professional fitter. It’s can be a bit daunting, so to help make it easier I ’ve tried to explain what we do and why, below. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!
Planning Ahead for Your Appointment:
You may wish to bring a friend - someone whose opinion you trust, and you know will be honest with you. We’d suggest that you only invite one or two people, not only because you’ll be spending a lot of time standing around half dressed, but also because too many opinions can cause confusion and make your decision more difficult.
If you already have something like jewellery you’re planning on wearing, or if you have a specific colour to match to, bring that with you as a point of reference.
Don’t worry about having the right shoes, as you’ll be in bare feet [or socks] for most of the fitting.
At the Appointment:
There’s no rush! - You pay a one time fitting fee of $40, which not only covers your initial 90 minute initial consultation, but also allows for you to come back to re-try gowns on another day. So you don’t have to make a decision on the spot!.
Please don’t use bronzer or rich body lotion on the day of your fitting. If you can possibly manage without it, don’t wear make-up to your gown consultation. Honestly, if it’s really a great dress, it will make you look good with or without the help of make-up, and you won’t have the hassle of trying not to smear foundation over the dresses.
Tell us about your plans- your venue, budget, preferred dress styles, and so on. Bring your notes, drawings, magazine cut outs, anything that will help the us get an idea of what you're looking for. Why? Well, as an example, there’s not much logic in having an extravagant white lace train on a damp sandy beach, or gauzy chiffon layers in the midst of a rose garden full of thorns. The more we know about your plans, the better we can advise you. It’s important to be sure that the dress fits your plans as well as it fits your body.
Help us to help you - Let your fitter know anything that may impact on your gown choice - for example, if you’re pregnant, or have a tattoo that you want to accent, or to hide, if you’re self conscious about your stretch marks, or want to show off your cleavage - the more we know about you, the better we can help find your gown!
Be honest about about your limitations - we don’t want to have you leave the studio discouraged and longing for a gown that you can’t have. This is especially important if you’re on a limited budget. It’s no fun to fall in love with a gown that you cannot possibly afford. We want to help you find the perfect gown WITH the perfect price tag.
Finding the ‘Perfect’ Gown
Take your time choosing, confident that we won’t pressure you. It’s far better to think about your options for a few days than to buy the wrong gown and regret the purchase. It’s important to be sure that the dress fits your style, that you ‘feel like a bride’ in it.
It’s a bit of a myth that you’ll recognise your perfect gown the instant you see it, or the first time you try it on. We don’t have a common frame of reference for what a wedding dress should look like on ourselves, and it can take a while for your brain to get used to the idea! It’s actually really common to NOT be able to make a decision straight away.
Trust your fitter, and be willing to try on different styles to find the one that is perfect for you. Often it’s the dress that looks nothing much on the hanger that will look stunning on you. Different styles can make you look taller or shorter, curvier or thinner. If a dress makes you feel silly, self-conscious, or overshadowed, put it back on the rack. Your perfect gown will make you feel beautiful, so your good bits look great, and it will hide your bad bits. The right dress will do all that, and more!
Unlike other dress shops, if you’re not finding anything that works for you, we’ll suggest different options, and can even arrange for you to meet with local dressmakers for a consultation before you commit to your gown..
